Project Overview
A highway maintenance contractor in Bavaria, Germany, was responsible for vegetation control across multiple roadside embankments with slopes reaching up to 42°. Traditional mowing methods required lane closures and exposed workers to traffic-related risks.
The client introduced the RCVIX RM-800 Remote Control Slope Mower through a trial deployment on selected high-risk sections. After an initial training and adjustment phase, the contractor was able to carry out vegetation maintenance remotely, reducing the need for lane closures while improving operational safety and efficiency.
Challenge
The client manages vegetation control along extensive highway networks, including embankments with slopes ranging from 30° to over 40°.
Operational challenges included:
Traffic-related safety risks: Workers required to operate close to active traffic lanes
Frequent lane closures: Maintenance activities often required partial road closures
Limited equipment capability: Conventional mowing equipment could not safely operate on steep embankments
High labor and coordination costs: Traffic control and manual trimming increased overall project complexity
The client required a safer and more efficient solution that could minimize disruption to traffic while maintaining consistent vegetation control.
Solution
RCVIX deployed the RM-800 Remote Control Slope Mower as part of a controlled trial program.
Implementation details:
2 units initially deployed on selected high-risk embankment sections
Operators trained for remote control operation and slope navigation
Remote mowing conducted from safe roadside positions with visual oversight
Gradual reduction in reliance on manual trimming crews
Adjustment period required to optimize mowing patterns along irregular embankments
Following the initial phase, the contractor integrated the equipment into routine maintenance
Result
Estimated 65%–80% reduction in maintenance time on treated sections
Reduced need for lane closures in many maintenance scenarios
Improved operator safety, with less exposure to traffic hazards
Lower labor dependency, particularly in high-risk areas
More consistent maintenance cycles across embankment zones
After the evaluation phase, additional units were introduced for expanded regional coverage.
Client Feedback
“The RM-800 allowed us to carry out vegetation control on steep embankments without placing our teams close to active traffic. After the initial adjustment period, we saw clear improvements in both safety and efficiency.” — Project Manager
