Project Overview

A forestry company based in Austria faced difficulties in managing steep forest slopes that were prone to invasive vegetation. Traditional methods, including chainsaw trimming and manual clearing, were inefficient and hazardous, especially during the wet seasons. The client sought a mechanized solution to reduce the labor intensity, improve safety, and enable faster response times for vegetation control.

The RCVIX RM-800 Remote Control Slope Mower was introduced as part of a trial to handle these challenging slopes. After an initial phase of training and adjustment, the client reported significant improvements in safety, cost-effectiveness, and operational efficiency, with the added benefit of reducing environmental impact by reducing the need for fuel-powered chainsaws.

Challenge

Alpine Forestry Ltd. operates in a mountainous region where steep slopes (up to 40°) are prone to invasive vegetation growth, which impacts the overall health of the forest. The primary challenges included:

Safety risks: Manual clearing involved working on steep, slippery slopes with high injury potential
Inefficient manual labor: The use of chainsaws and manual tools required significant labor force and led to long working hours
Limited equipment access: Traditional forestry equipment could not navigate the steep, uneven terrain without causing environmental damage
Environmental impact: Manual methods and fuel-powered equipment contributed to noise and air pollution

The client required a safer, more efficient solution to reduce manual labor, improve operational efficiency, and minimize environmental impact.

Solution

RCVIX deployed the RM-800 Remote Control Slope Mower as part of a controlled trial. The key implementation steps included:

Initial deployment of 2 units to test effectiveness on the most challenging terrain sections
Operator training focused on remote control handling, slope navigation, and optimizing mowing paths
Operational adjustments to accommodate rocky surfaces and dense underbrush
Environmental considerations: Remote operation eliminated the need for fuel-powered chainsaws, reducing emissions and noise pollution

After the trial, the client was able to increase operational efficiency significantly and reduce their reliance on manual labor.
